General Information

Who can use the library?

The library is public and open to all users. Anyone can use the library, receive a library card and borrow books. However, some of the services are for students and personnel only. In order to borrow material from
the library, you will need our library card.

How can I get a library card?

You can receive a library card from the Diak unit libraries. To get our library card you need to fill out a user application form and prove your identity with valid identification card. Remember to acquaint yourself with the library rules before signing the application form.
Once you register as a customer, you are committed to following the library rules. You are also responsible for all material borrowed on your library card.

Opening hours

Loan periods

Loan periods vary according to the collection which the item belongs to. The majority of the items have a loan period of 21 days. Loans may be renewed a maximum of 10 times. Renew loans either online (in DIANA, check the instructions for database use), at the library service desk, by e-mail or phone. Loans reserved by another customer cannot be renewed.

Overdue loans

Two reminders are sent out for overdue loans either by e-mail or by post to customers without an e-mail account. If loans are not returned or renewed within one week of the due date, the customer’s borrowing rights are suspended.

What books and journals do we have in our collections? Do we have a specific book/journal in store?

DIANA is the Diak library catalogue. Search DIANA to find out what we have in our library collections. Once you have a library card, you can also reserve books (instructions ») and renew loans through DIANA. To search for journal articles, look for a suitable database under the Databases and search tools heading.

How can I find journal articles and references about specific subjects?

To search for journal articles or references, look for a suitable reference database under the Databases and search tools heading, or explore the list of electronic journals and open access material.

How are the library collections organised?

The books/journals/videos etc. in the library are classified and shelved according to the YKL classification system (yleisten kirjastojen luokitusjärjestelmä), or in English, the PLC (the Finnish Public Libraries Classification system). In your own library, you may have other classification systems, such as the Universal Decimal Classification system (UDC) or the Library of Congress' (LC) classification system. To become familiar with the classes and structure of the YKL, visit http://ykl.kirjastot.fi/
